Brief Description:  It's the Little Things

Friday morning's first job was to remove the roll servo in the right wing and
ring out the wiring so I could label the wiring at the wing root. The auto pilot
servo is mounted at the bell crank in the right wing. The bell crank transfers
motion 90 degrees from the main push rod to the ailerons. When finished
I took a picture and sent to Don Broussard, who is a certified A/P and my tech
advisor. Don looks at airplane parts completely different than me. I am not
trained or experienced in all that is correct installation.
Don called and said I am missing wide area washers on the connecting bearings.
The ends of the push rods have fittings with ball bearing swivels for smooth operation.
Don said that it has been known for the fitting to come off of the ball bearing. A big
washer on each side of the fitting prevents a loss of control if that happens. Rare
but has happened.
You have to build with risk reduction everywhere!
Pic 1 arrows show where washers are needed on the right bell crank and servo arms.
Pic 2 shows left wing bell crank, which has no servo, where the big washer is installed
as it should be installed for safety. The 2 is showing how the bracket is made to
enclosed the bearing on both sides to prevent a problem.
